When I make music videos and music documentaries with my collaborator, co-founder of Slopehouse Productions and friend Adam Gundersheimer we take very seriously the challenge and responsibility of representing someone and the art that is their music. We have long, drawn out conversations with the musician about what the impetus of the song is, what they are going through in their life, their interests and concerns in the world. This work is not conventional commercial-content that lives and dies to serve capitalism: these are intimate collaborative-portraits. Our paramount concerns are people. The songs we create visuals for are sourced straight from people. It is with these people that we build a story, a visual world and/or an approach that feels true to them and their song. We do not believe in or submit cold-call “pitch docs” with our projections of what a music video should be for that person. It is always a conversation and a collaboration. I have made 18 collaborative music videos, and 5 live music documents and documentaries while enrolled in UCLA’s MFA program
